Alright Warrior,
Well… it’s me again, back in the land of tissues, congestion, and that bone-deep fatigue that makes brushing your teeth feel like an Olympic event.
Being sick is bad enough. The sore throat, the stuffed head, the “why do I feel like I got hit by a truck?” exhaustion. Zero stars. Do not recommend.
But here’s where I tripped myself up.
I was so wiped out that I went to bed early — totally out of my usual routine — and completely forgot to take my nightly meds. Not just vitamins. My actual medications. Including my behavioral health meds for bipolar, anxiety, and all the fun bonus features my brain comes with.
And listen… one night without them? I can usually manage.
Two nights? That’s when things get wonky real fast.
Anxiety starts creeping in. Depression starts tapping on the glass. It’s like they’re just lying in wait, watching for any opening, whispering, “Oh hey, you tired? Cool, we’re back.”
So consider this your gentle-but-real reminder (and honestly, mine too):
Mental health is health — even when you’re physically sick. Especially then.
When we’re under the weather, it’s so easy to:
Focus only on the physical stuff
Tell ourselves we’ll “catch up later”
Forget meds because routines are off
Assume skipping just once won’t matter
But our nervous systems are already under stress when we’re sick. Our sleep is off. Our energy is tanked. Our resilience is lower. That’s exactly when our mental health needs consistency the most.
Taking your meds. Using your coping tools. Letting yourself rest without guilt. Staying hydrated and fed even when nothing sounds good. Lowering expectations instead of pushing through.
All of that counts as mental health care.
And yeah — cold weather doesn’t technically make you sick. Viruses do. I know that. I swear I do. But somehow… every winter my body is like, “Ah yes, this again.” So here we are.
Tonight, I’m taking my meds. No skipping. No “I’ll remember later.” Because I know how quickly things can slide when I don’t.
If you needed this reminder too, please take it with love. You’re not failing. You’re human. And taking care of your mental health while you’re sick isn’t optional — it’s essential.
Be gentle with yourself. And be diligent, even when it’s annoying.
Love Always, Amy Your Mental Health Warrior & Neurodivergent Advocate 💚
P.S. If you’re anything like me and forget things when life gets busy (or foggy), this is your nudge to sign up now for the free virtual summit I'm co-hosting with Michele Lefler, Sweet On Me: Candy Heart Conversations for Self-Love & Care, running February 12–14. It’s free, it’s nourishing, and it’s a beautiful reminder to pour some love back into yourself.
